New Mom Must Haves

START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW…AND LOVE!
Remember to listen to your inner voice and go with what works for you. You can have style without necessarily wearing the latest runway fashion. Try to get everyday pieces in colors you can interchange with a variety of tops and tees. Remember, black, white and chocolate are classic and go with just about anything!

Your lifestyle will largely determine your maternity clothing needs, but the following pieces are essential. Thanks to companies like uMaMe you don't have to buy starter pieces separately — instead let us help you with a "Pregnancy Survival Kit" with several separates in one handy box.

  1. Jeans: jeans are a must because they go with almost everything! Consider maternity versions of your favorite designers such as Citizen, Paige, etc.
  2. A classic T-shirt: A classic tee also goes with everything. Choose the style you prefer (crew or V-neck) making sure there's a bit of stretch in the material so it'll grow with you.
  3. Tunics: Longer tops whether ruch side-gathered or cut straight to sit low on the hip, flatter an ever changing figure.
  4. Black stretchy pants: This comfort favorite can be worn from your first weeks of pregnancy through your postpartum months, and can be worn dressed up or down as you need it.
  5. Skirts: The length you choose will depend on your height and your style preference, but you'll get lots of use out of skirts by either dressing them up for work or down for play.
  6. Men's Style Button-Down Shirt: Borrow one of your husband's for a casual look at home or choose a tailored maternity style (narrow through the top and shoulders with plenty of room for your growing belly) making it softer and more feminine by adding a camisole underneath.
  7. Any dress will do: The timeless little black dress is definitely not off-limits for new moms. Seasonal wrap around styles and flowing satiny fabrics can be as elegant as they are easy.
  8. Trendy accessories: Being pregnant doesn't mean that you have to forget about accessorizing. 'Glam up' your outfits with your favorite pieces, or find ones that will remind you of this very special event in your life.

You'll find everything you need to get you started at Maternity Boutique. Call us at 757-422-5502 if you see something here online that you like or better yet, stop in and browse for yourself.

SIZING DOES MATTER
There are some general tips on finding the right size for your new shape.

  • When trying anything on, look at the size you were before you were pregnant, not what you think you are now. Most clothes come extra small (0-2), small (4-6), medium (8-10), large (12-14), and extra large (16). In addition, some companies make 1X and 2X.
  • Know your petites and talls! Very few maternity companies make petites and talls. For your convenience we do carry one style of jeans fitted for petite and tall. You'll want to note that many labels will say they are a size P (petite), but this means it is really an extra small—it is not shorter in length. So remember, Petite in maternity is a size, not a length.

FOCUS ON QUALITY
Well-made clothing will stand the stress of repeated washings/dryings and is well worth the investment. Choose quality fabrics and trusted manufacturers. Maternity Boutique carries clothing from companies who have been in this business for many years and are here to stay.

Remember quality in the styles of your wardrobe too. Trendy outfits are fun, but you will want them to flatter your individual figure. From classic to trendy we can help you find the right fit to compliment your style preference!
