Five Great Pregnancy Foods
Get the most nutritious bang for your buck with these foods:
- Orange Juice – Not only is this juice high in vitamin C and folic
acid, it's also a good source of potassium, which has been shown to help lower high
blood pressure, a particular danger during pregnancy.
- Yogurt – A good source of protein, yogurt has more calcium than
milk and also contains active cultures that reduce the risk of yeast infections
which are more common while you're expecting. Also, some people who are lactose
intolerant can tolerate yogurt.
- Broccoli – Known for being a good source of calcium, this veggie
is also packed with vitamin C, folate and vitamin B6.
- Lentils – Like beans, lentils are a great source of folate and
are rich in iron and protein. They're also full of fiber which can help prevent
constipation and subsequent hemorrhoids.
- Figs – Fresh or dried, figs have more fiber than any typical fruit
or vegetable, more potassium than bananas and plenty of calcium and iron.
Why Babies Have Tantrums & What You Can Do About Them
- Overtired – Settle baby down to sleep; provide quiet activity.
- Hunger – Give baby a snack or something to drink.
- Frustration – Help baby achieve his goal or remove the frustration.
Use distraction.
- Fear / Anxiety – Hold and cuddle baby; remove baby from difficult
situation.
- Inability to Communicate – Try to figure out what baby wants; calmly
encourage him to show you.
- Resisting Change – allow a few minutes for baby to make adjustment.
- Over Stimulation – Move baby to a quiet place.
Tantrum Prevention Tips to Keep in Mind:
- When baby is tired, put him down for a nap or to sleep.
- Feed your baby frequently; babies have small tummies and need frequent nourishment.
- Give your baby toys that are geared to his age and ability level.
- Warn your baby before changing activities ("one more swing then we’re going home")
- Be patient when putting your baby in a new environment
- Help your baby learn new skills
- Keep your expectations realistic; don't expect more than your baby is capable of.
- As much as possible, keep a regular and predictable schedule.
- When your baby is overly emotional, keep yourself as calm as possible.
- Use a soothing tone of voice and gentle touch to help your baby calm down.
"Fido, Meet Baby..."
Worried about how Fido and Fluffy, your current babies, will react to sharing the
household with your new baby? Here are some quick tips from the Humane Society for
introducing your newborn to the family pet:
- Before bringing baby home from the hospital, have your partner take home something
with the baby's scent (such as a blanket) for your pet to investigate.
- Train your pet to remain calmly on the floor beside you until you invite him on
your lap, which will soon cradle a newborn.
- Accustom your pet to baby-related noises months before the baby is expected (play
recordings of a baby crying, turn on the mechanical infant swing, use the rocking
chair). Offer a treat or playtime. Make these positive experiences for your pet.
- If the baby's room will be off-limits to your pet, install a sturdy barrier, such
as a removable gate, that will still allow your pet to see and hear what's happening
in the room. He'll feel less isolated and more comfortable with the new baby noises.
- Use a baby doll to help your pet get used to the real thing. Carry around a swaddled
baby doll, take the doll in the stroller when you walk your dog, and use the doll
to get your pet used to routine baby activities.
- Sprinkle baby powder or baby oil on your skin so your pet becomes familiar with
the new smells.
Benefits of Green Tea
A nice, hot cup of green tea is great after a sleepless night of pregnancy or a
stressful day with a new baby, but we bet you didn't know it can also help depuff
the under eye area, says Rona Berg, author of Fast Beauty: 1,000 Quick Fixes. Just
prepare two cups of tea and let them steep for two minutes. As the tea cools, remove
the tea bags and toss them into the fridge. Gently squeeze bags, apply to the under
eye area for 10 minutes and watch as puffiness disappears in a flash.
